Lakewood Controversy Grows After YouTuber Publishes Video Targeting Orthodox Jewish Community

A right-wing YouTuber released a 73-minute film that many leaders and people have called antisemitic and disrespectful to Lakewood’s Orthodox Jewish population, sparking a political and social crisis in New Jersey.
Tyler Oliveira marketed the video on X with a controversial message. He used anti-Semitic words to disparage the film and the community in his message. It went viral, gaining millions of views in days.
Oliveira wanders through Lakewood, Ocean County, New Jersey, neighborhoods, accusing them of Medicaid fraud and public assistance. He asks neighborhood members about large families and assumes they misuse taxpayer cash. A man is asked why he doesn’t “move back to Israel.” In another interaction, he asks why Jewish families may live in a homogenous environment when white populations face criticism or legal impediments.
The video shows a local police officer telling Oliveira that neighbors called over 150 times about his activities in Lakewood communities while filming. He received calls from worried citizens about his public actions.
Lakewood has one of the largest Orthodox Jewish populations in the US. Lakewood has an estimated 70% Jewish population. The Jewish populations of surrounding Brick, Howell, and Jackson have grown in recent years. Development, educational financing, and public services have sometimes clashed due to fast growth. Community leaders have regularly emphasized respectful dialogue and cooperation.
The video’s uproar comes as New Jersey’s antisemitism rises. The Anti-Defamation League found a substantial rise in state antisemitic occurrences in recent years. Communities experiencing antisemitic acts increased considerably between 2021 and 2024. Over the previous five years, hundreds of New Jersey communities have reported antisemitic incidents. New Jersey had the most antisemitic attacks per capita in 2024, according to the group.
State leaders reacted harshly to the video. Governor Mikie Sherrill denounced the web film’s comments. She said antisemitism and bigotry have no place in New Jersey and that the state will safeguard all groups from hate and bias.
Public figures also reacted to the video. Conservative activist Laura Loomer questioned the documentary’s framing and what was being “exposed,” noting that Jewish Americans live peacefully in their communities.
Nick Shirley, a MAGA influencer, openly praised Oliveira’s article, urging publicity. Shirley has a significant YouTube following and has covered other state fraud cases.
Lakewood’s state senator, Robert Singer, did not reply to calls for comment when the controversy was revealed.
The argument stresses free speech, online influence, and community relations difficulties. Some fans think the movie highlights questions about public expenditure and local administration, but detractors claim the language and context are antisemitic and hurtful. Civil rights advocates say such narratives can cause discrimination and hostility.
Following global tensions, antisemitism in New Jersey has grown. Since October 7, 2023, occurrences have increased in frequency and severity. Community organizations and state authorities have consistently appealed for unity, respect, and responsible public speech.
Leading politicians are being urged to comment on the viral video. The incident highlights the national debate about online content, accountability, and viral media’s impact on local communities.
Peace and neighbor protection remain top priorities for many Lakewood and adjacent town residents. State leaders have criticized hate-based rhetoric, and law enforcement responds to community reports.
