Hospital Ambulance Taken in Early Morning Carjacking Outside Newark Medical Center

Police say an ambulance parked outside a nearby hospital was carjacked early Thursday morning in Newark. The accident occurred at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, with two emergency medical professionals in the car.
At 2:40 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said officers were summoned to the hospital on Central Avenue for a carjacked ambulance. A man confronted the two EMTs inside the parked emergency car.
Police said the man forced the ambulance driver and second emergency personnel out. No patients were in the vehicle during the incident. EMTs remained at the hospital as the suspect sped away in the stolen ambulance.
Law enforcement promptly searched for the car. In the 200 block of Central Avenue, police found the ambulance. No injuries were recorded, however officials found a cell phone gone from the recovered vehicle.
A man matching the suspect’s description was arrested by New Jersey Institute of Technology police. Investigators questioned him to discover his role. Case is still under investigation.
Despite hospital security, the situation has created safety worries. Life-saving emergency vehicles are essential. Such incidents can delay emergency response and exhaust first responders.
