Ryan Fink and Michael Dilks of the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to the call before 5 p.m. They came to find the huge bird inside the home, startled by the sudden contact but attentive. Police said the hawk appeared perplexed but not in distress.

The hawk’s status was unknown Friday. The bird’s status was unknown as wildlife refuge officials were unavailable. Authorities stressed that the response was calm and responsible to protect residents and the animal.
New Jersey is home to red-tailed hawks with strong wingspan and keen hunting skills. Bird observations are common, but birds entering dwellings are rare and worrisome. Local officials advised the people to call experienced personnel rather than approach wildlife directly.
The incident shows how near humans and wildlife cohabit, especially in suburbs. Local police and animal control quickly responded, turning a terrifying situation into a carefully supervised rescue attempt without injuries.
