New Jersey Amateur Boxer Dies in Early Morning Road Collision

The 30-year-old rising amateur boxer Davon Porter was killed crossing Route 9 near Quality Chevrolet in Old Bridge early Saturday morning. At 1:25 a.m., police found Porter hit by a Honda CR-V. The police proclaimed him dead on the spot.
The driver is unknown and may be charged. The Old Bridge Police and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the death. Contact them with security video or information.
Porter excelled in New Jersey amateur boxing tournaments. Gleason’s Gym Jersey Shore member and New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream boxing mentor for at-risk youth. Porter inspired community youth athletes, says program founder Jacklyn Atkins.
While training at the highest level, Porter mentored other young men and women in the gym as much as we did for Davon, Atkins said.
After reaching the finals, Porter won the NJ Golden Glove. Gleason’s Gym recognized him as the first gym member to compete in the preliminary stages in March 2025.
Outside the ring, Porter was kind, patient, and hardworking. As a union carpenter, he helped the gym and community and encouraged athletes. He inspired coaches and friends with his calm, encouraging words and acts.
Porter represented everything right, according to gymmate and buddy Adam Nelson. He leaves an eternal void. He inspired others to strive, and his legacy will last.”
Porter’s former Crossroads South Middle School teacher Cory Slater praised his mentoring. He progressed from student to great community instructor. Any teacher wants their student to become that, and Slater has always been proud of him.
Gleason’s Gym and Give a Kid a Dream will develop a memorial fund for young carpenters, which Porter pursued alongside his athletics.
Authorities are examining the crash. A dedicated boxer and mentor whose accomplishments inside and outside the ring impacted many is mourned.
