NJ Transit Steps In as Broadway Bus Company Ends After 101 Years

Starting Monday am, NJ Transit will start running buses in Bayonne for real. After the Broadway Bus Company ceases running on Sunday, they will take over. The new No. 12 route will keep people living on Broadway linked without any pauses.

The new route will cover practically all of Broadway. This will help riders find their way and get more regular service. The initial Broadway Bus Company ran buses every hour. NJ Transit plans to run them every 30 minutes. For students, commuters, seniors, and individuals who go shopping, this is a major step forward for those who require reliable transportation.

The new route will also let riders go to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail at the 8th Street and Avenue C stop. On December 10, it will connect with NJ Transit’s No. 6 and No. 8 buses at the Twin City Shopping Center. This will provide people more options for getting about the neighborhood and the surroundings.

The Broadway Bus Company, which has been run by the same family for decades and served Bayonne, declared in November that it will stop running its last line. The option ends a period for many long-term residents who have relied on the service for years.

NJ Transit has been taken over like this before. The agency has had to step in six times since 2021 to take over for private bus companies that had to stop running in New Jersey because their costs were going up and they were having trouble running their businesses. Officials from NJ Transit estimated that it will cost around $1.6 million a year to keep the Broadway line running. The Broadway line can’t link to other NJ Transit lines, even if it runs adjacent to them, because it fits the special needs of the area.

Local officials were happy that NJ Transit acted so promptly. Jimmy Davis, the mayor of Bayonne, officially praised the agency for making sure that critical public transportation is still functioning. He also praised the Broadway Bus Company’s leaders for their many years of devotion to the city and its people.

The purpose of NJ Transit is to keep things the same while making them more dependable for passengers. The purpose of the new service is to make sure that people can travel around quickly, efficiently, and regularly in the busy commercial hub of Bayonne. The purchase is a significant deal.
