Police Sergeant Faces Multiple Shoplifting Charges at New Jersey Supermarket

Multiple Hillsborough grocery stealing charges were filed against a seasoned North Plainfield police officer. David R. Canica, 50, a 27-year North Plainfield Police Department veteran, was charged with four grocery thefts last week, according to court
On November 3, 9, 10, and 19, reported thefts happened. Canica allegedly stole $213.82 from Route 206’s 300 block Weis Markets. These are New Jersey disorderly person charges.
Store personnel identified Canica using his shopper rewards card. Hillsborough Police received his voluntary surrender. Canica was to appear in court after processing.
Since November 1, 1998, David Canica has worked for North Plainfield Police. He earns $129,000 annually, per public records. After his arrest, the department suspended him without pay pending legal processes.
Canica’s long law enforcement career and the amount of alleged instances have drawn attention to the case. It questions police case management and public official accountability.
Legal experts say many disorderly people violations can result in fines, probation, or jail time. Retail security, which discovered the perpetrator through routine monitoring and consumer loyalty data, is also highlighted.
North Plainfield Police Department said it is cooperating with authorities and following internal standards. Residents of the community closely observe legal proceedings.
