A 10-year-old boy and 21-year-old woman were killed and three others injured in a Newark South Ward shooting on Saturday night. The family wants justice, shaking the community. Investigators say the case is moving quickly.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said all five victims were taken to University Hospital after the 7 p.m. gunfire. A boy and woman died despite being saved. On Sunday morning, an 11-year-old boy, 19-year-old man, and 60-year-old man were stable.

The shooting occurred near homes and small businesses on Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street. Detectives blocked several streets overnight to find clues. Police searched stores, sidewalks, and discarded clothes for evidence.

A local called it scary and chaotic. Residents of nearby apartments heard gunfire and screams. They fled after “more than six shots,” she said. Many residents were displaced by the nightlong investigation, causing neighborhood distress.

Newark leaders grieved after accidentally losing a 2-year-old earlier that day. Mayor Ras Baraka called the shooting “a dark and devastating day for Newark” and promised to find the shooter.

Mayor said there was “no safe place to hide” and that city, state, and federal authorities are investigating and urging the suspect to surrender. A city official offered families condolences and support.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy urged residents to pray for victims and their families during the investigation.

Director Emanuel Miranda said the shooting deeply affected Newark police. He promised “vigorously” arrests with local and federal partners. Miranda advised reporting all information, even small tips.

Up to $10,000 was given for arrest cooperation. Investigators believe community help could find the attackers.

Child and young adult violence rises in the city as families grieve and survivors heal. Residents hope swift justice and safety will prevent more heartbreak.
