New Jersey Teen Detained by ICE While Working to Support College Dreams Faces Uncertainty

An 18-year-old Woodbridge shipping and logistics worker was arrested by federal immigration authorities. New Jersey high school graduate. Suero worried about her son’s safety after his late Sunday night move.
ICE arrested 46 Savino Del Bene employees in Avenel, Woodbridge, including Bello-Cabrera. Jhonatan called his mother at 2 a.m. to say a guard had ordered the detainees to pack for transfer. Suero was worried when her son called the situation frightening because he is young and has always been responsible, focused on school, and helpful at home.
Suero said her son works hard and follows the law to pay for college. His ICE custody worries the family. Jhonatan’s family doesn’t know if he went to Louisiana immigration detention like his coworkers.
Jhonatan, from Colombia, applied for US residency four years ago. His mother verified his SSN and work permit. It appears the raid ignored his legal documents. Even though the detainees were hardworking employees, Suero thought the raid was too militarized, with agents wearing tactical gear, using dogs, and moving quickly
His family submitted paperwork to legalize him through his U.S. citizen stepfather, Richard Suero, but he was detained. Despite his November 18 immigration court date, Jhonatan’s detention location and treatment worry the family.
Jhonatan applied to several colleges after graduating from Elizabeth’s John E. Dwyer Technology Academy. He saved for college but didn’t go. His employer’s CBP customs bond allows federal inspections and cooperation.
Young immigrants in the US face personal challenges, especially those trying to educate and secure a stable future through complex immigration processes. The Sueros and other families are eagerly awaiting updates and a solution to help their loved ones stay in school and stable.
