Bridgeton Police Searching for Driver After Fatal Hit-and-Run

Authorities said the Saturday night tragedy in Cumberland County shocked and grieved the community.
A individual lying on East Broad Street and James D. Edwards Sr. Way was investigated by police about 9:30 p.m. Pedro Chavez, 58, of Bridgeton was severely hurt when authorities arrived. Emergency measures failed and Chavez died on site.
Investigators believe Chavez was hit by a westbound car on East Broad Street’s westbound shoulder while walking east. Chavez was critically injured when the car didn’t stop. Authorities say passenger side damage, including the windshield, may identify the suspect’s car.
