Mother Accidentally Injures Son During N.J. School Drop-Off, Police Report

An 8-year-old boy was injured outside a Union Township elementary school on Thursday morning when his mother ran over his leg while putting him off for his first day. The 8:15 a.m. accident required emergency medical assistance for the toddler’s ankle.
Union Township Police said it happened near Battle Hill Elementary School’s drop-off zone. Department Capt. Pietro Digena said the baby was treated at Summit’s Overlook Medical Center. Although authorities ruled the occurrence an accident, parents and school administrators have discussed drop-off safety and the need for extra caution on busy mornings.
Witnesses said the mother was distressed and working with officials. Thankfully, emergency services treated the child promptly. Though rare, instances like this highlight the necessity for effective school access and leave safety safeguards, authorities added.
School administrators will review drop-off procedures to prevent accidents. Union Township Police also recommended parents to keep children away from moving cars during school pick-up and drop-off.
The event emphasizes New Jersey and US school zone child safety concerns. Parents should double-check surroundings, respect traffic rules, and teach youngsters safe vehicle approaches, according to officials.
The boy is stable, but the accident highlights how perilous ordinary life can be. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise drivers to drive carefully in school zones to avoid accidents.
