New Jersey Fugitive Wanted in Child Sexual Assault Case Captured After Multi-State Search
A New Jersey man wanted in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a young girl has been arrested in Louisiana after authorities tracked him down following a multi-state search. Law enforcement officials say the arrest marks a significant step in a criminal case that has remained under investigation for several years.
According to officials, 28-year-old Jose F. Caal Pop, of Pennsauken, New Jersey, was taken into custody in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Thursday. The arrest was carried out by the U.S. Marshals Service with assistance from the Shreveport Police Department. Authorities said specialised officers and a police K-9 were involved in the operation after the suspect reportedly refused to surrender peacefully.
Investigators say the criminal case is connected to an incident that allegedly took place on March 1, 2021, in Camden County, New Jersey. The victim was reportedly younger than 13 years old at the time of the alleged assault. Following the investigation, prosecutors formally filed charges against Caal Pop on June 11, according to New Jersey court records.
Court documents show that the defendant is facing multiple serious felony charges. These include four counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault involving a child under the age of 13, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. The allegations are among the most serious offences prosecuted under New Jersey criminal law, and the case is expected to move forward once the suspect is returned to the state.
Authorities said officers located Caal Pop at a residence in Shreveport during the arrest operation. When law enforcement attempted to take him into custody, he allegedly ignored repeated commands to surrender and hid on the second floor of the home. Police then deployed a K-9 unit to assist officers in safely bringing the situation under control.
Officials reported that the suspect suffered minor injuries during the arrest and received medical treatment before being transported to the local city jail. He is currently being held in Louisiana while officials complete the legal process required for extradition back to New Jersey, where he will face the pending criminal charges.
The arrest highlights the role of cooperation between federal and local law enforcement agencies in locating individuals wanted on serious criminal charges across state lines. The U.S. Marshals Service regularly works with local police departments to locate and arrest fugitives who attempt to avoid prosecution by leaving the jurisdiction where charges were filed.
At this stage, the charges against Caal Pop remain allegations. Under the U.S. legal system, every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Prosecutors will have the opportunity to present evidence during future court proceedings, while the defendant will have the right to respond to the allegations through the judicial process.
