New Wawa Store With Fuel Station Nears Completion at Upper Pittsgrove’s Pole Tavern Intersection

A new Wawa convenience store with a gas station is steadily taking shape at one of Salem County’s busiest intersections, bringing fresh services and new job opportunities to the Upper Pittsgrove community. Construction is moving forward at the site along Route 40, where the well-known Pole Tavern Wawa served local residents for more than five decades before closing earlier this year.

The replacement store is being built at 759 Route 40 in Upper Pittsgrove Township and is expected to welcome customers during the fall, according to company officials. The larger location is designed to better serve the area’s growing traffic while offering the full range of convenience store services and fuel options that customers have come to expect from newer Wawa locations.

Construction crews have made noticeable progress in recent weeks, with the structure of the approximately 6,000-square-foot building now clearly visible. The project represents a significant upgrade from the previous store, which had become a familiar stop for commuters, truck drivers, and local residents over its more than 50 years of operation.

The original Wawa at the Pole Tavern traffic circle permanently closed in April before demolition work began to make way for the new development. For many people in Salem County, the former store was more than just a convenience stop. It had become a recognizable landmark at the intersection of Routes 40 and 77, serving generations of travelers passing through the region.

The new facility is expected to provide a more modern shopping experience while improving convenience for customers who also need fuel. Larger Wawa locations with gas pumps have become increasingly common across New Jersey as the company continues investing in upgraded stores that can handle higher customer demand and increased vehicle traffic.

As construction continues, Wawa has also begun preparing for the store’s opening by hiring employees for multiple positions. Current job listings include customer service associates and fuel associates, giving local residents an opportunity to join the workforce before the location officially opens its doors. Recruiting ahead of the launch helps ensure the new store is fully staffed when operations begin later this year.

The expansion reflects Wawa’s continued investment in communities throughout New Jersey, where the company has regularly replaced older stores with larger facilities that offer expanded services. These upgraded locations often provide additional parking, improved store layouts, modern food preparation areas, and fuel stations to better meet customer needs.

For residents of Upper Pittsgrove Township and nearby communities, the new store is expected to restore an important stop that many relied on daily while also introducing updated features not available at the previous location.
