NJ Transit Passenger Arrested Following Late-Night Altercation With Teen on Bergen County Line

A late-night dispute aboard an NJ Transit train in Bergen County ended with the arrest of a 37-year-old New Jersey man after authorities said he became involved in a physical altercation with a teenage passenger and allegedly made threatening remarks during the incident.

According to officials, the incident happened on Saturday night aboard a Bergen County Line train travelling toward Hoboken. The train had departed from Waldwick and was nearing Rutherford Station when the confrontation broke out between an adult passenger and a juvenile.

NJ Transit said the train crew quickly responded after the situation escalated. As the train arrived at Rutherford Station at approximately 9:10 p.m., crew members contacted law enforcement and kept the train at the station while officers responded. Their actions helped prevent the situation from escalating further and ensured the safety of other passengers on board.

Authorities identified the arrested man as 37-year-old Brandon Wagner of Franklin Borough. Investigators said he allegedly fought with the teenage passenger and also made threats during the incident. No serious injuries were immediately reported, and officials have not released details about what led to the confrontation.

Following the investigation at the station, NJ Transit Police arrested Wagner and filed several criminal charges. He was charged with theft of service and making terroristic threats. Court records also show additional charges, including possession of cocaine and interference with transit operations.

The incident temporarily disrupted the train’s scheduled trip. The Bergen County Line train was expected to arrive in Hoboken at approximately 9:28 p.m., but it remained at Rutherford Station while police conducted their investigation and removed the suspect from the train.

Authorities have not released the identity of the juvenile involved because of age-related privacy protections. Officials also have not announced whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Court records indicate Wagner was scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Thursday morning. His public defender was not immediately available to comment on the case.

Incidents involving passenger disputes on public transportation are treated seriously because they can place riders and transit employees at risk while also disrupting scheduled service. Transit agencies encourage passengers to report aggressive or threatening behaviour immediately so crews and law enforcement can respond as quickly as possible.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional information regarding the events leading up to the altercation. Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
