Eagles Defensive Standout Jonathan Greenard Sidelined by Injury Ahead of Training Camp Opener

The Philadelphia Eagles will begin training camp without one of their biggest offseason additions after veteran edge rusher Jonathan Greenard suffered a minor injury before the team’s first official practice.

Greenard is expected to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after sustaining a pectoral strain during a workout before camp. While the injury will keep him off the field at the start of practice, early reports indicate that it is not considered a serious long-term issue. The team remains optimistic that he will return once he has fully recovered.

The timing is unfortunate for both Greenard and the Eagles, as training camp is a critical period for building chemistry, learning defensive schemes, and preparing for the upcoming NFL season. However, placing a player on the PUP list during training camp allows the medical staff to closely monitor recovery while ensuring the player avoids unnecessary setbacks.

Philadelphia made a major investment in Greenard earlier this year after acquiring him from the Minnesota Vikings during the 2026 NFL Draft. In exchange, the Eagles sent two third-round draft picks to complete the deal, signaling their confidence in his ability to strengthen one of the league’s most competitive defenses.

Shortly after the trade, the Eagles reinforced that commitment by signing Greenard to a four-year contract extension worth $100 million, with $50 million guaranteed. The agreement reflected the organization’s belief that he can become a cornerstone of its defensive front for years to come.

Greenard enters Philadelphia with an impressive track record as one of the NFL’s most productive pass rushers. During the 2024 season, he earned Pro Bowl honors after recording 12 sacks, showcasing his ability to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks. He also posted 12.5 sacks during the 2023 campaign, further establishing himself as one of the league’s top edge defenders.

His development in Minnesota turned him into one of the NFL’s most reliable defensive playmakers. Beyond his sack totals, Greenard has earned praise for his versatility, athleticism, and ability to disrupt offensive game plans. Those qualities made him a priority target for the Eagles as they looked to strengthen their pass rush entering the new season.

Although Greenard’s absence will be noticeable during the opening days of camp, the injury is not expected to affect his availability for the regular season if recovery continues as anticipated. Medical evaluations have indicated that the strain is manageable, and there is optimism that he will return to practice once team doctors determine he is ready for full football activities.

For now, Philadelphia’s coaching staff is likely to use the opportunity to evaluate other pass rushers and provide additional practice reps to younger players competing for roster spots. Training camp often serves as an important evaluation period, and Greenard’s temporary absence could give several backups valuable opportunities to impress the coaching staff.

The Eagles have built one of the NFL’s deepest defensive units, but Greenard was expected to play a central role in generating pressure off the edge. His experience and proven production make him a key part of the team’s defensive plans, especially as Philadelphia looks to remain among the league’s top contenders.

While fans may be disappointed to see one of the team’s newest stars miss the opening practices, there appears to be little reason for long-term concern. If his recovery stays on schedule, Greenard could rejoin the team during training camp and continue preparing for the start of the regular season.
