Delaney Hall Protest Escalates as Demonstrators Block Vehicles and Multiple Arrests Follow

A protest outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark turned increasingly tense on Friday after demonstrators blocked vehicles from leaving the property, resulting in confrontations, property damage, arrests, and the use of pepper spray.

The demonstration had been ongoing throughout the day near the detention center, where protesters gathered with signs criticizing immigration enforcement policies. For much of the afternoon, the event remained peaceful as participants stood outside the facility and voiced their concerns. However, conditions changed significantly later in the day when a group of protesters moved to block an exit used by vehicles leaving the detention center.

According to accounts from the scene, nearly a dozen demonstrators positioned themselves across an exit route and prevented vehicles from departing. Protesters shouted at drivers and challenged individuals leaving the facility. While some vehicles were allowed to pass, others became trapped as demonstrators remained in front of the exit.

Detention center staff reportedly redirected some vehicles back inside the secured property as the situation became more difficult to manage. Despite those efforts, several drivers attempted to slowly move through the crowd. During these encounters, some protesters were knocked to the ground as vehicles advanced through the blocked exit area.

The confrontation intensified when security personnel responded to individuals who were obstructing vehicles. One member of the facility’s emergency response team deployed pepper spray during the incident as authorities and security staff worked to clear the roadway.

A separate altercation occurred when a protester allegedly grabbed onto a vehicle while it was attempting to leave the property. Security personnel intervened, leading to a physical confrontation that was quickly brought under control. Witnesses reported that the same individual later climbed onto the hood of another vehicle and held onto parts of the car before falling away as the vehicle continued moving.

Law enforcement later arrested a 28-year-old man from Seattle, Washington, in connection with property damage during the protest. Authorities said he faces multiple criminal mischief charges after investigators alleged that he damaged vehicle windows during the disturbance. At least one windshield was reported broken as vehicles attempted to leave the facility.

A second arrest was also reported. Authorities said an Arizona resident was taken into custody by federal investigators on allegations of assaulting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during Friday’s events.

Earlier in the evening, emergency vehicles, including an ambulance and a supervisory vehicle from University Hospital in Newark, were escorted into the secured area of the property. The reasons for their presence were not immediately detailed during the protest activity.

The situation continued to develop after sunset. Shortly after 6 p.m., protesters reportedly moved large sand-filled traffic barriers and emptied sand onto the roadway. The barrels and sand were then used to obstruct an exit route, creating additional challenges for vehicle movement around the facility.

Friday’s escalation followed another incident reported the previous day involving damage to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle. Protest activity has continued outside Delaney Hall for approximately two weeks, drawing attention from advocacy groups and community members.

The demonstrations began during the Memorial Day weekend period after allegations concerning conditions inside the privately operated detention facility. Since then, protesters have maintained a regular presence outside the center, with Friday’s events marking one of the most confrontational episodes seen during the ongoing demonstrations.

As investigations continue, local and federal authorities are reviewing the incidents that occurred during the protest, including allegations involving property damage, assaults, and roadway obstruction. The events highlight the growing tensions surrounding the detention facility and the increasingly heated demonstrations taking place outside its gates.
