Jackson Township Teen Accused After Grandmother Found Dead Inside Apartment

An 18-year-old New Jersey resident is facing serious criminal charges after authorities said his grandmother was found fatally stabbed inside their apartment in Jackson Township on Monday morning.

According to officials from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Louis Brown was taken into custody after police responded to a 911 call at the Jackson Green apartment complex located on Justin Way. Investigators said the call came in shortly before 7 a.m., with the caller reporting that a person had been murdered inside the residence.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Brown standing at the front door of the unit. Authorities said he exited the apartment with his hands raised and was immediately taken into custody without incident. Investigators later confirmed that Brown himself had placed the emergency call.

Inside the apartment, officers discovered the body of 69-year-old Darlene Brown. Prosecutors said she suffered multiple stab wounds to the face and neck. Authorities also stated that two knives were found protruding from her body at the scene.

Louis Brown has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He remains held at the Ocean County Jail while awaiting a detention hearing.

Officials have not publicly discussed a possible motive behind the incident, and the investigation remains active.

Throughout Monday, a large police presence surrounded the apartment complex as investigators processed the scene. Yellow crime scene tape blocked off areas near the residence while officers and emergency personnel moved in and out of the building. Witnesses also reported seeing investigators carrying evidence bags from the apartment to an Ocean County investigative vehicle parked nearby.

Residents of the apartment complex described the situation as deeply shocking. Neighbor Jasmina Perazic told local media that Darlene Brown lived in the apartment with her grandson, who was reportedly a high school senior. Perazic said she witnessed Louis Brown being taken away in handcuffs earlier that morning.

She described Darlene Brown as a kind and caring person who regularly interacted with neighbors in the community. According to Perazic, the grandmother had been raising her grandson after the death of his mother from sickle cell anemia.

Neighbors said there had not been obvious warning signs leading up to the incident. Perazic explained that Louis Brown was generally quiet and had previously experienced bullying during school years, but she believed he was doing well academically.

Another resident, Vanessa Purcell, said she was outside with her baby shortly before police arrived at the complex. She later witnessed what appeared to be a covered body being removed from the building on a stretcher.

By late Monday afternoon, investigators appeared to be wrapping up work at the scene as police tape was gradually removed from the area.

The case continues to be investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Jackson Township Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies involved in the homicide investigation.
