Rowan University Campus Activities Disrupted After Major Power Failure Halts Operations in Glassboro
A significant power outage forced Rowan University to suspend all campus activities on Monday, disrupting the second week of its summer academic session at the main campus in Glassboro, New Jersey.
According to university officials, the outage began around 8:30 a.m. and was traced to a substation responsible for supplying electricity to the Gloucester County campus. Due to the sudden loss of power, university administrators made the decision to cancel all scheduled events and activities for the day to ensure safety and manage campus operations effectively.
The disruption came at a critical time, as Rowan University had recently begun its summer semester on May 12, with dozens of classes already underway. The sudden shutdown created inconvenience for students and faculty, many of whom had to quickly adjust their academic plans.
University spokesperson Joe Cardona confirmed that instructors were given flexibility in handling affected classes. Depending on course requirements, faculty members may either reschedule sessions or shift to online instruction when such disruptions occur. Rowan University, which serves approximately 24,500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, is one of New Jersey’s major public institutions. In addition to its main campus in Glassboro, the university also operates academic programs in Stratford and Camden, making the outage’s impact primarily centered on its largest campus.
The incident comes shortly after the university concluded its commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2026 on Friday, marking an unexpected disruption following an otherwise significant academic milestone.
