World Cup Visitors Try New Jersey’s Famous ‘Ripper’ Hot Dog at MetLife, But Does It Match the Original?

Fans attending FIFA World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium have been given the chance to sample a version of one of New Jersey’s most recognizable local foods—the famous “Ripper” hot dog. The special menu item, called the “Garden State Ripper,” was introduced as part of the tournament’s effort to showcase regional food traditions at each host stadium. While the idea celebrates New Jersey’s culinary identity, one question quickly emerged among local fans: can this stadium version truly match the original Ripper that has become a state legend?
The original Ripper is closely associated with Rutt’s Hut, a longtime New Jersey establishment located just a few miles from MetLife Stadium. Unlike a traditional grilled or steamed hot dog, the Ripper is deep-fried until its skin splits open, creating the signature “rip” that gives the hot dog its name. It has become one of New Jersey’s most well-known comfort foods and attracts visitors from across the region.
For the World Cup, stadium food operators created the Garden State Ripper as part of a larger initiative in which every tournament venue offers an exclusive menu item inspired by its local culture and flavors. According to event organizers, the goal is to give international visitors an opportunity to experience foods that represent the communities hosting World Cup matches.
The chef responsible for the stadium menu explained before the tournament that the Garden State Ripper was designed as a local-inspired version of the famous hot dog, adding the venue’s own interpretation while introducing visitors to a well-known New Jersey specialty.
The creators of the original Ripper at Rutt’s Hut also acknowledged the stadium version before the tournament. While expressing appreciation for the recognition, they reminded fans that the authentic Ripper can only be found at their restaurant, reinforcing the reputation their signature hot dog has built over many decades.
Finding the Garden State Ripper inside MetLife Stadium, however, was not as simple as expected. There was little signage directing visitors to the stand, and several stadium workers and volunteers were unable to identify its location. After searching throughout the main concourse and asking multiple employees for directions, the stand was eventually located in the stadium plaza outside the main seating areas.
Once found, the menu featured several different hot dog choices in addition to the Garden State Ripper concept. Alongside a Turnpike Dog topped with classic ingredients such as chili and onions, visitors could also choose a Colombian Dog featuring pineapple salsa, ketchup, mayonnaise, diced pineapple, and potato sticks. The variety reflected the international atmosphere of the World Cup while still highlighting regional flavors.
To make the most direct comparison possible, the reviewer selected a plain hot dog without toppings. A freshly purchased original Ripper from Rutt’s Hut was also brought to the stadium, allowing both hot dogs to be evaluated side by side under the same conditions.
The differences became noticeable immediately. The original Ripper displayed the familiar appearance that New Jersey fans recognize, with its deeply fried, wrinkled skin and crispy exterior created during the cooking process. The Garden State version looked much different, appearing closer to a traditional hot dog rather than the distinctive fried style that has made the original famous.
The comparison highlighted how appearance alone set the two versions apart before the first bite was even taken. While the World Cup offering introduced visitors to the idea of the famous New Jersey hot dog, its presentation differed noticeably from the classic version that many longtime fans associate with the Ripper name.
For international visitors attending matches at MetLife Stadium, the Garden State Ripper offers an opportunity to experience a local food inspired by New Jersey’s culinary tradition. At the same time, the original Ripper continues to hold its place as a landmark food that many residents believe can only be fully experienced at its historic home.
As the World Cup brings fans from around the globe to New Jersey, local specialties like the Ripper have become part of the tournament experience, introducing visitors to flavors that reflect the region’s food culture while also sparking conversation about what makes an authentic local favorite.
