Major CNN Poll Shows Sharp Decline in Public Confidence Over Trump’s Economic Leadership

A newly released national survey has highlighted a significant drop in public confidence regarding President Donald Trump’s management of the U.S. economy, reflecting growing concern among Americans over rising living costs and overall economic direction.
According to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS, a large majority of Americans expressed disapproval of the president’s handling of economic issues. The results show that 70% of respondents disapprove of how Trump is managing the economy, while only 30% approve. This marks one of the lowest approval levels recorded for him on this issue in CNN polling history.
The economy remains one of the central challenges facing the administration, especially as many voters had expected improvements in the cost of living during Trump’s second term. However, the poll indicates that everyday expenses such as groceries and fuel have continued to stay high, which has contributed to public frustration.
A key finding from the survey shows that a strong majority of Americans directly link rising prices to government policies. Around 77% of those surveyed believe that Trump’s policies have contributed to higher costs in their local communities. Additionally, approximately two-thirds of respondents feel that the overall economic situation in the country has worsened under current policies.
The poll also explored public opinion on specific global and economic factors influencing prices. Many respondents pointed to international tensions involving Iran and trade tariffs as major contributors to financial pressure. About 75% said the Iran-related conflict has negatively impacted their personal finances, while 65% expressed similar concerns about tariffs.
Beyond the president’s approval ratings, the survey also reflects a broader political picture ahead of future elections. When asked which political party they trust more to handle economic challenges such as inflation and the cost of living, Americans were divided but slightly leaned toward Democrats. About 35% said they trust Democrats more on economic management, compared to 33% who preferred Republicans. On the issue of living costs, Democrats held a larger lead, with 37% support versus 28% for Republicans. A similar trend appeared on inflation, where 33% trusted Democrats and 28% trusted Republicans.
However, the poll also highlights a significant level of public dissatisfaction with both parties. A notable portion of respondents said they do not trust either party to effectively manage these economic concerns, underscoring widespread frustration across the political spectrum.
The economy and cost of living continue to dominate public priorities. In the survey, 55% of Americans identified these issues as the most important problems facing the country today, far ahead of other national concerns.
The findings are based on responses from 1,499 U.S. adults surveyed between April 30 and May 4. The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
Overall, the results reflect a challenging political and economic environment, with rising living costs continuing to shape public opinion and influence trust in leadership at the national level.
