Vineland Launches $5.3 Million Accessible Park Project to Expand Inclusive Recreation
A major step toward inclusive community development has begun in Vineland, New Jersey, where city officials have officially started construction on a new $5.3 million park designed to serve people of all abilities. The project, located at the Romano Youth Sports Complex on Maple Avenue, reflects a growing focus on accessibility and equal recreational opportunities for residents.
City leadership confirmed that the entire project is being funded through a New Jersey Green Acres grant, ensuring no local tax burden for its development. Officials expect the park to be completed by early fall, bringing a modern, inclusive outdoor space to the area within months.
The new park is being carefully planned to support individuals with a wide range of physical and sensory needs. At its core will be a fully accessible playground divided into eight distinct zones. These areas are specifically designed to allow children and adults with different abilities to engage comfortably and safely. Many of the features will include wheelchair-accessible equipment, making it easier for everyone to participate without barriers.
In addition to the playground, the project will introduce a sensory garden. This space is intended to provide a calm and engaging environment, particularly beneficial for individuals on the autism spectrum. The design focuses on creating a peaceful setting that supports sensory experiences in a controlled and welcoming way.
The park will also feature permanent shaded canopies across most activity areas, offering protection from weather conditions and improving overall comfort for visitors. This addition ensures that the space remains usable throughout different times of the day and during warmer seasons.
Another key highlight of the project is an ADA-compliant aquatic splash play area, which will add a recreational water feature accessible to individuals with disabilities. Alongside this, inclusive exercise circuit stations will be installed around the existing Ernie D. Marcacci running and walking track, allowing visitors to stay active in a fully accessible environment.
Supporting infrastructure is also being upgraded to match accessibility standards. Plans include new picnic tables, park benches, and a fully ADA-compliant parking lot to ensure convenience and ease of access for all visitors.
The Romano Youth Sports Complex, which spans 52 acres, already includes facilities such as soccer fields, a baseball diamond, a football field, walking paths, and a running track. The addition of this inclusive park will significantly enhance the complex, transforming it into a more welcoming and diverse recreational hub for the community.
This development highlights a broader commitment by local authorities to create public spaces that prioritize inclusion, accessibility, and community well-being.
