Minor earthquake shakes Morris County, NJ early Monday morning

July 21, 2025, Morris County, The USGS reported a minor earthquake in Morris County early Monday morning. The 5:40 a.m. 1.6 magnitude tremor west of Morris Plains caused a momentary stir but no injuries.

Five kilometers below the surface, the quake happened. The modest event was observed by seismic monitoring equipment. Local officials, including the Morris Plains Police Department, said quake victims did not contact and no damage was reported. Public attention to the early morning tragedy was low, according to Lieutenant Ryan McKay.

The USGS defines “light” earthquakes as those between 1.4 and 3.9 that cause little shaking or structural damage. The Monday tremor was inside that range, signifying no hazard to people or property.

While large earthquakes are prevalent in the area, they highlight New Jersey’s geological activity. In reality, Morris County and North Jersey have experienced seismic displacement before.

Last April 5, 2024, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook New Jersey, New York, Washington, D.C., and other Northeastern states. New Jersey had its biggest earthquake since 1783, warning citizens that geological shifts can occur anywhere.

Bergen County was affected by a 7.7-kilometer, 2.4-magnitude earthquake on January 24. Lebanon, New Jersey experienced a 1.5-magnitude tremor on June 28.

A trend of low-magnitude earthquake activity around the state continued Monday in Morris County. Though innocuous, these vibrations remind us of New Jersey’s subtle, relentless movements. Geologists and local officials monitor earthquake activity to keep inhabitants safe.

Officials advise the public to follow emergency measures and report any odd shaking or structural issues, especially in mild earthquakes.
