A senior Catholic leader in New Jersey has publicly criticized former President Donald Trump after he shared an AI-generated image portraying himself in a Jesus-like role, sparking backlash among religious communities and political observers alike.
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, who leads the Archdiocese of Newark, issued a strong statement addressing the incident. He expressed concern that the image reflected a lack of understanding and respect for deeply held religious beliefs. According to Tobin, the use of sacred imagery in such a manner is offensive to millions of faithful individuals and undermines the spiritual significance attached to religious figures.
The controversy began when Trump posted an artificial intelligence-generated image on social media that appeared to depict him in a role similar to Jesus, including scenes resembling acts of healing. The post quickly drew criticism, including from some of his own supporters, who viewed it as inappropriate and disrespectful. The image was removed roughly 13 hours after being shared.
Speaking at a White House news conference, Trump defended his decision by stating that he saw the image as portraying him in the role of a “doctor,” rather than intending any religious comparison. However, the explanation did little to calm concerns among religious leaders.
Cardinal Tobin’s remarks came shortly after a nationally broadcast interview in which he appeared alongside other prominent Catholic figures, including Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago and Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington. The situation unfolds amid rising tensions between Trump and Pope Leo, who have recently exchanged criticism over issues including war and immigration policies. Trump previously criticized the Pope’s stance on foreign policy and crime, while Pope Leo responded by asserting that he is not intimidated by political pressure.
