Traffic Restored on Route 1 in Edison After Two-Day Closure Caused by Water Main Rupture
Local officials said Wednesday that Route 1 in Edison has reopened after a water main break closed part of the route for more than two days. Commuters were disrupted and repair staff had to act quickly in winter conditions.
A 75-year-old “X” water main under Route 1 broke. Edison Mayor Sam Joshi said the burst caused water to flood onto the road, causing ice patches and a three- to four-inch sinking. The impacted highway segment was closed immediately due to risky driving conditions.
Near 10 a.m., repair personnel began work. Beginning Monday and lasting 36 hours. To keep drivers safe, they cleared ice and dirt from frozen water and stabilized the road. The closure forced drivers to find alternative routes during repairs, disrupting traffic.
The water main broke south of Route 514 at Travers Avenue. Local residences were generally impacted, although neighbors were warned to expect fluctuating water pressure in nearby communities, especially around Route 1 and Player Avenue, until repairs were complete.
Mayor Joshi thanked maintenance staff and local law enforcement for managing traffic and protecting public safety throughout the closure. He noted the harsh winter circumstances personnel faced, including below-freezing temperatures and ice on the route.
Officials advise travelers to be cautious as some roadway sinking may still occur despite significant repairs on Route 1. Local authorities responded quickly to safely reopen the road without long-term commute interruptions.
