Tiny Chihuahua Found Safe After Enduring New Jersey’s Harsh Winter Storm
After three days in severe weather circumstances, a missing family dog in New Jersey was found and reunited with her owners, providing a rare respite during a snowy weekend.
Trixie, a 9-pound chihuahua, disappeared Saturday near Summit, Union County. Trixie was last spotted wandering through a residential area when a major winter storm pounded New Jersey, according to animal rescue groups and local authorities.
Over the weekend, New Jersey endured severe cold, snowfall, and ice. Some regions were blanketed with nearly a foot of snow and ice due to cold temperatures. Small dogs with limited natural insulation against extreme cold rarely survive such situations, which is worrisome.
Trixie remained missing for over three days despite online searches and appeals. Tuesday afternoon brought a breakthrough. Summit Police said a neighborhood member found and brought the dog to police headquarters. A “very special person” helped end the family’s nightmare, according to officers.
Trixie was examined by a veterinarian after being brought in to make sure she hadn’t been hurt by the weather or being outside. Police found her stable and returned her to her relatives.
The Summit Police Department expressed relief and thanks, adding that the dog survived almost three days in subzero conditions and heavy snow. They also praised residents who searched, shared, and monitored the missing cat in bad weather.
The story shows how extreme winter weather may harm pets and the need of community awareness during emergencies. Local authorities advise residents to keep pets indoors and report lost pets during storms.
Trixie’s family had the finest finish to a scary few days. After a weekend missing during one of the coldest winter months, community effort, quick action, and resilience led to a safe reunion.
