Mikie Sherrill Will Make New Jersey History With Newark Inauguration

On January 20, 2026, New Jersey’s Democratic governor-elect Mikie Sherrill will begin her term in a historic way. In contrast to every other newly elected governor, Sherrill will be sworn in in Newark at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Trenton’s 235-year reign as Garden State capital ends with this decision.
Sherrill’s Newark inauguration is remarkable for many reasons. Essex County, home to Newark, the state’s largest and most diversified city, helped Sherrill win the 2025 governorship. In November, Essex County voter turnout skyrocketed, helping Hillary win the state with 57% over Republican Jack Ciattarelli.
The second governor’s inauguration outside Trenton since the late 18th century will be at NJPAC. The same place swore in former Governor Christine Todd Whitman for her second term in 1998. First governor to break Trenton custom is Sherrill.
Sherrill promised to listen and deliver for all New Jerseyans when she announced her swearing-in site. She promised to lower family costs, provide kids opportunities, and run a transparent, accountable state government. Many people connected with her campaign themes, resulting in a double-digit win.
Lieutenant Governor-elect Dr. Dale Caldwell has spoken on Newark’s inaugural site, along with Sherrill. Caldwell was happy to start the new government in a city with strong entrepreneurial, community, and cultural ties.
Mayor Ras Baraka, who supported Sherrill after finishing second in the Democratic primary, called Newark a fitting setting for such a historic event. He noted Newark’s rich immigration history, democratic principles, and civic involvement support Sherrill’s administration.
Sherrill’s Newark inauguration shows her desire to engage with supporters and disrupt political traditions. She becomes governor with a voter mandate and a new approach to celebrating leadership transitions as a former U.S. Congresswoman and youthful leader with public service and national security expertise.
