After 30 Years, Long Beach Island Bids Farewell to a Cherished Pizza Shop

A Long Beach icon Family memories, late-night slices, and summer vacations have happened at A Slice of Heaven for 30 years. After its lease ended and the building was sold, Beach Haven Pizza shuttered on November 17, 2025.

In May 1995, Dominick and Colleen Mazzella gambled. Handmade meatballs, cheesesteak pizza, and a friendly atmosphere made the college student-run pizza place a local favorite.

A Slice of Heaven celebrated. The business was part of family vacations, milestones, and bereavement since Dominick loved hockey. After eating their father’s favorite pizza, they scattered his ashes on the seashore. On stormy evenings after Superstorm Sandy, candles lit the ovens, showing the restaurant’s strength and neighborhood connection.

Because Dominick died before 50 in May 2024, Colleen seeks closure. To honor their son Dominick, who flung dough behind the counter, she runs the pizza shop.

Colleen craves tales. Space permitting, she wants to open a Long Beach Island store again. “We’re not done,” she argues, despite high rents.

LBI residents and summer guests liked A Slice of Heaven and pizza. Restarts again.
