Veteran Democrat Revives Push to Oust Trump as He Promises Another Impeachment Showdown

Rep. Al Green of Texas is back in the national spotlight, pledging to impeach President Donald Trump again. On Thursday, Green, one of the most vocal Trump critics, announced that he will present new impeachment articles before Congress breaks for the holidays.

The latest push comes despite Republicans controlling the House, making impeachment unlikely. Green said his decision was part of a larger objective, not a political statement. He called the attempt to hold the president responsible “a movement for all time.”

Green stressed that impeachment is a constitutional process that involves the public as well as parliamentarians, but he did not specify his charges. He believes democratic participation and public interaction are necessary for legitimacy and significance.

Rep. Green has fought this before. He was the first House Democrat to call for Trump’s impeachment in 2017, just after Trump fired James Comey. He struggled to get party support at the time, but the move started a years-long campaign to undermine Trump’s presidency.

Green frequently sought impeachment in 2017, including a high-profile effort accusing Trump of promote prejudice through public utterances. Despite some of those efforts being withdrawn or denied, Green became one of Trump’s most strident and uncompromising congressional detractors.

Green’s latest articles of impeachment, proposed earlier this year, accused Trump of unauthorised military action against Iran’s nuclear program. It failed as several Democrats and Republicans voted against it.

Green will propose his new resolution as a privileged measure to speed up House consideration. As with several of Green’s prior initiatives, the resolution could be thrown out before a meaningful vote.

Green addressed supporters personally, emphasizing that everybody who believes in fairness and democratic accountability is part of his years-long movement. He asked Americans to preserve constitutional processes and hold political leaders accountable to the people.

White House responded promptly to news. The administration’s rapid-response team slammed Green and other Democrats for trying to reignite a false impeachment effort.

Green, a Democrat, has been criticized for interrupting Trump during a joint address to Congress earlier this year and for his impeachment attempts. He maintains that Trump’s activities warrant study despite criticism.

Trump has faced impeachment before. The House impeached him twice in his first term, for power abuse and obstruction in 2019 and incitement about January 6 in 2021. The Senate acquitted him twice.

Green is ready to press his cause with another effort, even though the political context makes success doubtful. He is more concerned with the principle than the odds, challenging presidential power and keeping the subject in the public front.
