NJ Transit Steps In Again to Keep Bus Service Alive After Private Operator Exits

Recently, NJ Transit saved six local bus routes after another private carrier left. State officials confirmed that the agency will take over Broadway Bus Company’s only Bayonne route on Dec. 1, serving thousands of daily riders.
November saw Broadway Bus Company close. Many small private bus operators have struggled financially and staffing-wise, and the company’s departure shows instability.
The busiest commercial corridors of Bayonne affect daily life. This line transports local shoppers, workers, students, and seniors to stores, medical offices, schools, and other essential destinations. Without NJ Transit, riders would have lost vital transportation before winter.
NJ Transit officials said the takeover is part of their commitment to reliable transportation in areas where private bus companies cannot operate. In 2021, the agency filled service gaps after private carriers cut routes.
Bayonne city leaders and transportation advocates welcomed the announcement because bus access disruptions would have burdened transit users. The NJ Transit transition aims to keep riders on time.
Officials said they want buses running smoothly before the December takeover. Further route changes or upgrades are expected in the coming weeks.
