Late-October Foliage Peaks in New Jersey’s Northern and Southeastern Counties

Many New Jersey leaves change at their peak in October. The latest seasonal update illuminates northern New Jersey and the southeast with spectacular fall foliage. This week’s inspection found 11 counties’ tree canopy fully red, orange, and yellow.
Leaf change has advanced in peak-color counties, providing the best view. Locals and tourists view colorful hills and valleys. North: Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Somerset; south: Ocean and Atlantic (in northern portions) and southeastern coastal region. These areas have the most color intensity. Although the foliage is just shy of peak, nearby counties offer fantastic views with more green. Many southwest and coastal counties are still in the color cycle, with leaves changing but not saturated.
The weather is perfect for leaf-watching this weekend. Photo and scenic driving greenery will be highlighted by partly to mostly brilliant skies. Cooler afternoon highs in the upper 50s prevent leaf drop and protect the canopy, extending color.
Fall enthusiasts should book visits to greater color zones immediately. The north and southeast are busiest. Central and far southern counties may have less intensity, but still in the “color change” window. North-elevation places may be past their prime, therefore going south or east may be better.
Visit peak or near-peak counties for weekend leaf viewing. Arrive in daylight for the best color midafternoon. Layer up because wind and cold can enhance leaf drop. Take time to visit lakes, viewing points, and quiet backroads with lush forest canopy.
After season peaking, things change swiftly. Wind, rain, or a drop in temperature can quickly remove leaves, bare trees and their colorful palette. This weekend could be excellent for a scenic drive or wildlife trip.
Explore less-visited parks, state forests, or backroads in southeastern counties to see foliage without crowds. That area’s peak is timely, so you may see the color without the throng in the north.
