Super Foodtown to Close Long-Standing Port Monmouth Store, Marking End of Local Era

Super Foodtown

On October 24, Super Foodtown will permanently close its Route 36 location, bringing back memories for Port Monmouth residents. The corporation thanked customers for their years of support and invited them to Atlantic Highlands and Red Bank. This closure ends decades of gathering, service, and familiarity at the property.

On social media, store management thanked consumers for their loyalty and stated the call was made with “heavy hearts”. The large grocery store will close, although the liquor store in the same retail center may remain open for local service.

Longtime customers and employees mourn the closure. Many shared their first grocery store employment and everyday routines on social media. One former employee said Foodtown shaped their career, while others hoped a new grocery store would replace it to make local residents, especially seniors, more convenient.

Executives of Super Foodtown claimed the company will continue servicing local customers. Although the remaining establishments may take some of the displaced business, the loss of Port Monmouth means a longer trek for some, especially walkers. Analysts and local business watchers blamed this closure on rising operational expenses, shifting customer buying patterns, and competition.

amid the Port Monmouth shutdown, the retail grocery business struggles to maintain smaller, community-focused stores amid market pressures. If grocery chains reassess their presence, long-standing stores may close more often unless they adjust their business models.

Port Monmouthers now go without a daily staple. After the signs disappear, Super Foodtown memories, rituals, and personal histories will live on. While the company’s remaining outlets may absorb some demand, a neighborhood mainstay has lost value.
