Republicans Propose Commemorative Coin to Honor Late Conservative Leader Charlie Kirk

Charlie Kirk

Republican lawmakers want to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk with a silver dollar coin. Later this week, Congress will consider a plan for the U.S. Treasury to manufacture 400,000 coins with Kirk’s portrait, full name, and 2026. The coin’s reverse would read “well done, good and faithful servant,” highlighting Kirk’s activism and ideals.

The campaign is led by Texas Rep. August Pfluger and Arizona Rep. Abe Hamadeh, who hailed Kirk’s effect on American conservatism. Pfluger noted that Kirk would be one of the youngest people ever recognized on American currency and among the most significant personalities in U.S. history. Hamadeh called Kirk a “American treasure,” emphasizing his conservative ideals and political engagement for future generations.

Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot at a Utah Valley University event earlier this month and died. He was a rising voice and cultural leader among conservatives, whose abrupt death stunned political circles nationwide. Supporters say a commemorative coin will honor his brief but significant life and signify his legacy.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and President Donald Trump, a strong Kirk ally who commended his efforts to mobilize younger conservatives, must approve the proposal. If approved, the coin would join the U.S. Mint’s long history of commemorating important individuals, places, and events. Surcharges on modern commemorative coins have earned hundreds of millions of dollars for museums, monuments, and historical preservation since Congress allowed them in 1982.

Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony were honored with cash, but current law prevents portraits of living people on U.S. currency. Thus, Kirk’s inclusion would honor his conservative work posthumously. Lawmakers supporting the legislation claim his accomplishments are comparable to those of presidents, founders, and other legendary Americans who molded the nation.

Another tribute coin proposal is being considered. Republican lawmakers are also considering giving Kirk the Congressional Gold Medal or Presidential Medal of Honor. These acts would join a growing number of memorials to preserve his name and message.
