CVS to Continue COVID Vaccines in New Jersey While Restricting Access in Other States

CVS Pharmacy says revised COVID-19 vaccines will be available without a prescription in New Jersey, even as it restricts access in other states. The decision comes as the nation prepares for respiratory virus season and government vaccine policy discussions continue.

Companies said the restrictions are due to state laws on when and how pharmacies can give immunizations. In 13 states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Virginia, CVS will require a prescription for COVID-19 shots. Additionally, CVS outlets in Massachusetts, Nevada, and New Mexico will not sell the vaccine. The corporation said federal health officials’ recommendations could influence its strategy.

However, New Jerseyans will have easier access. CVS confirmed that any eligible state residents can walk in or arrange an appointment for the new COVID-19 shot without a prescription. This policy makes New Jersey one of the states with easy access, for now.

CVS acted days after the FDA authorized new COVID vaccinations from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax. FDA approval increased protection for elderly persons but limited younger groups. Moderna’s shot is licensed for six-month-olds with major health issues that increase risk. Pfizer’s vaccination is approved for children as young as five under comparable conditions, but Novavax’s is exclusively for children 12 and older with qualifying medical concerns.

At the same time, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has not released new national guidelines. The panel’s September meeting was postponed after lawmakers highlighted transparency and decision-making issues. Pharmacy chains like CVS must obey state-level laws until the CDC gives guidance, resulting in a nationwide patchwork of availability.

Health officials disagree on who should get immunizations. The CDC does not recommend COVID vaccination for healthy children or pregnant women, however the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends it for children aged six to 23 months to prevent serious disease. Parent and healthcare provider confusion increases as fall approaches due to contradicting instructions.

CVS’s unrestricted vaccine availability in New Jersey should make immunization easier. Experts say easy availability to immunizations can lessen hospital burden and safeguard vulnerable communities throughout flu, RSV, and COVID seasons.

CVS has stated that current policy may change if federal regulators adopt new national regulations. Until then, New Jerseyans can get their vaccinations without a prescription, unlike many surrounding states.
