Trump Threatens to Remove Homeless from D.C.—May Deploy National Guard
WASHINGTON (Aug 10, 2025) – President Donald Trump has announced a bold plan to remove homeless individuals from the nation’s capital and arrest criminals, despite local officials insisting there’s no major crime surge.
Will the National Guard Step In?
A U.S. official said that the White House is thinking of sending hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington. This is a move that might generate trouble or be like when Trump sent military to Los Angeles for immigration rallies.
But there hasn’t been a definitive decision yet, and it’s still not clear what the military will do.
In other states, governors are in charge of the National Guard. In D.C., however, Trump is in charge of the Guard. The last major deployment was during the January 6 Capitol riots in 2021.
Trump’s Strong Warning
On his Truth Social platform, Trump posted:
“The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”
But legal experts question how Trump can enforce this, since the federal government only controls federal land, not the entire city.
D.C. Fights Back: “Crime is Falling!”
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (a Democrat) pushed back, saying:
“We are NOT experiencing a crime spike. After a bad surge in 2023, we’ve brought violent crime to a 30-year low.”
Police data supports her claim:
Violent crime down 26% (Jan–July 2025 vs. 2024)
Overall crime down 7%
Federal Crackdown Already Underway
The White House says 450 federal officers were sent into D.C. over the weekend after a violent attack on a young staffer angered Trump. Officers have been arresting people for:
Carrying unlicensed guns
Driving with suspended licenses
Illegal dirt bike riding

Trump will hold a press conference Monday to discuss his plan to “stop violent crime in D.C.” Will he reveal more details about evicting the homeless? Stay tuned.
