Derek Carr Starts New Chapter as UCLA Adds Former NFL Quarterback to Coaching Staff
Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr is taking his football career in a new direction after joining the UCLA Bruins as a special advisor to head coach Bob Chesney.
UCLA announced Carr’s addition to the programme on Monday, marking the beginning of his coaching career after 11 seasons as an NFL quarterback. Carr is expected to bring his experience as a long-time professional quarterback to UCLA’s offensive staff, where he will assist with game-planning and work directly with the team’s quarterbacks.
The move gives UCLA another experienced football voice as the programme prepares for a new chapter under Chesney. Carr spent more than a decade playing quarterback at the highest level of the sport, including nine seasons with the Raiders before finishing his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints.
Carr’s role at UCLA is not being described as a traditional assistant coaching position. Instead, he will serve as a special advisor, giving him the opportunity to contribute his knowledge and experience while working alongside the coaching staff and players.
For UCLA, the addition comes at an important time. Chesney is entering his first season as the Bruins’ head coach after spending the previous two seasons at James Madison. His career began at Fresno State, where he became one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the school’s history. Carr’s college success eventually led to his selection by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
He quickly became a major part of the Raiders’ offence and went on to earn four Pro Bowl selections during his professional career. Carr remained with the Raiders for nine seasons before joining the New Orleans Saints.
Over his 11 NFL seasons, Carr passed for 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions. Those numbers reflect the experience he now brings into a college football environment, where developing quarterbacks is one of the most important responsibilities for an offensive programme.
Carr’s connection to UCLA also extends beyond his playing career. He has a relationship with Bruins general manager Darrick Yray, who was part of the Fresno State staff during Carr’s college years. That existing connection helped create a link between Carr and the UCLA programme.
The timing of Carr’s arrival is also notable because UCLA has a quarterback with significant expectations surrounding him. Former five-star recruit Nico Iamaleava is among the talented quarterbacks on the Bruins’ roster, giving Carr an opportunity to work with a player who entered college football with considerable attention.
Carr’s presence could provide Iamaleava and UCLA’s other quarterbacks with lessons that go beyond throwing mechanics. For Chesney, bringing Carr into the programme also adds another experienced perspective to his offensive staff. The new UCLA coach has already demonstrated success at the college level, but Carr offers a different type of football knowledge built through years of professional competition.
Chesney praised Carr’s playing experience, leadership and understanding of the quarterback position while welcoming him to UCLA. He also highlighted Carr’s interest in helping develop younger players.
The former NFL quarterback’s transition to coaching will be one of the more interesting developments to follow around the Bruins this season. Carr has spent most of his career taking instructions from coaches, studying opponents and leading offences from inside the huddle. His new position will allow him to use those experiences from the other side of the game.
It remains to be seen how much influence Carr will have on UCLA’s offence during his first season in the coaching environment. His official responsibilities, however, put him in a position to contribute to both preparation and quarterback development.
