FDA Clears New Dual-Action Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever That Offers Up to 12 Hours of Relief

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new over-the-counter pain medication that gives consumers another option for managing everyday aches and pains without a prescription. The newly approved product, Tylenol with Naproxen, is the first nonprescription medicine in the United States to combine acetaminophen and naproxen sodium in a single tablet, offering both quick pain relief and longer-lasting effects.
The approval marks a notable development in the over-the-counter pain relief market, where many products rely on a single active ingredient or different medication combinations. By bringing together two widely used non-opioid pain relievers, the new medicine aims to help people who need longer-lasting relief from common pain without turning to prescription medications.
According to the FDA, the product is intended for adults and children aged 12 years and older. It can be used to relieve a variety of minor aches and pains, including headaches, muscle aches, back pain, toothaches, menstrual cramps, and pain associated with the common cold. The medication is also designed to reduce fever while providing pain relief for up to 12 hours.
Each tablet contains 325 milligrams of acetaminophen, the active ingredient commonly found in traditional Tylenol products, along with 110 milligrams of naproxen sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The recommended adult dose is two tablets, delivering a total of 650 milligrams of acetaminophen and 220 milligrams of naproxen sodium in a single dose.
Health experts have long recognised the benefits of both ingredients individually. Acetaminophen is known for helping reduce pain and fever, while naproxen sodium provides anti-inflammatory benefits and typically offers longer-lasting pain relief than some other over-the-counter medications. Combining the two into one product gives consumers the convenience of using a single medication instead of taking separate products.
Manufacturer Kenvue, the consumer health company behind the Tylenol brand, said the combination was developed to address the needs of people who feel their current pain medications do not provide enough relief. The company noted that many individuals living with recurring or persistent pain continue to look for effective nonprescription treatment options that last longer throughout the day.
Company officials stated that the new medication begins working in less than 30 minutes while continuing to provide pain relief for up to 12 hours. They also emphasised that the product is completely non-opioid, making it another option for consumers seeking pain management without the risks associated with opioid medications.
The FDA’s approval also includes a three-year period of marketing exclusivity for this specific over-the-counter formulation. During this time, competing manufacturers generally cannot market the same combination product under similar conditions, giving Kenvue exclusive rights to sell the newly approved formulation.
The approval comes as interest in safer, non-opioid pain management continues to grow across the United States. Public health officials have encouraged the development of additional treatment options that can help reduce reliance on prescription opioid medications while still providing effective relief for everyday pain.
Although the medication is available without a prescription, healthcare professionals continue to remind consumers that over-the-counter medicines should always be used exactly as directed. Taking more than the recommended amount of acetaminophen can increase the risk of serious liver damage, while long-term or excessive use of NSAIDs such as naproxen sodium may increase the risk of stomach bleeding, ulcers, heart attack, or stroke in some individuals. People with existing medical conditions, those taking blood-thinning medications, or anyone unsure whether the product is appropriate for them should consult a healthcare provider before use.
The FDA’s decision expands the range of pain relief products available to consumers and reflects ongoing efforts to improve access to effective, nonprescription treatment options. As more people seek convenient and longer-lasting relief from common pain, the newly approved combination medicine offers another choice that combines two well-established ingredients into a single tablet.
