New Fox News Poll Signals Tough Road Ahead for Trump as Democrats Gain Ground Before Midterm Elections

President Donald Trump is warning supporters about what could happen if Democrats regain control of Congress, as a newly released national poll suggests the party currently holds a noticeable advantage ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Speaking during a campaign-style rally in Georgia, Trump told supporters that a Democratic victory could lead to major changes in the federal government. He argued that Democrats would likely push for policies such as admitting new states into the United States and ending the Senate filibuster, a procedural rule that requires a higher vote threshold for many legislative actions.

While making his remarks, Trump also joked about how he might react if Republicans lose control of Congress.

He said that if Democrats were successful, he could end up watching those changes from home and added that people would not want to see him crying. The comment drew attention during the rally as Trump continued encouraging Republican voters to stay engaged ahead of the upcoming elections.

His remarks came on the same day that Fox News released a national survey showing Democrats with an early lead in voter preference for congressional races.

According to the poll, 53 percent of registered voters said they would support a Democratic candidate for Congress if the election were held today, while 46 percent said they would choose a Republican candidate. Although the election is still months away, the numbers indicate that Democrats currently hold an advantage in national voter sentiment.

The survey also examined counties where the 2024 presidential election was highly competitive. In those closely contested areas, Democratic candidates performed even better, holding a 59 per cent to 41 per cent advantage over Republicans. Political analysts often view these swing areas as important indicators because they frequently determine control of the House of Representatives.

Voter enthusiasm also appears to favour Democrats at this stage. The poll found that 68 per cent of Democratic voters described themselves as extremely motivated to participate in the 2026 midterm elections. Among Republican voters, 57 per cent reported the same level of motivation.

Higher enthusiasm can play a major role in election outcomes because motivated voters are generally more likely to cast ballots during midterm elections, which traditionally attract lower turnout than presidential contests.

Despite the encouraging national numbers for Democrats, some election experts believe the race for control of the House remains competitive. Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who helps conduct Fox News polling, noted that national vote totals do not always translate directly into congressional seats.

He explained that Democratic support may be concentrated in districts they already control, meaning Republicans could still keep a House majority even if Democrats win the national popular vote by a small margin. However, he added that if Democrats maintain a lead of six to seven percentage points nationally, their chances of winning control of the House increase significantly.

The survey also asked voters which party they trust more to handle major national issues.

Democrats received stronger ratings on several key topics, including income inequality, health care, inflation, the economy, foreign policy, government spending, and immigration. The results suggest many voters currently believe Democratic lawmakers are better positioned to address economic concerns and other domestic challenges.

Republicans, meanwhile, maintained an advantage on issues related to crime and national security. Those subjects have traditionally been areas where Republican candidates have performed well, and the latest survey indicates they continue to hold a slight edge with voters in those categories.

The poll also measured public opinion of Trump’s overall job performance. His approval rating stood at 39 per cent, remaining near one of the lowest levels recorded during his current term.

The survey found that more voters disapproved than approved of Trump’s handling of several major issues. Immigration received a 42 per cent approval rating, while economic management received 33 per cent approval. Inflation produced the weakest result, with only 27 per cent approving of the administration’s handling of rising prices. The president also received negative ratings on U.S. policy involving Iran.

Although national polling offers an important snapshot of public opinion, election experts caution that campaign dynamics can shift considerably before voters head to the polls. Candidate quality, fundraising, economic conditions, major legislative developments, and voter turnout will all influence the final outcome of the 2026 midterm elections.

For Republicans, the latest survey highlights the importance of strengthening voter enthusiasm and addressing concerns about the economy and inflation. For Democrats, the poll suggests positive momentum, but political analysts note that maintaining a national lead through Election Day will require continued voter engagement in competitive districts.

With several months remaining before Americans vote, both parties are expected to intensify their campaigns as they compete for control of Congress. The balance of power in the House and Senate will shape the legislative agenda for the remainder of Trump’s presidency, making the 2026 midterm elections one of the most closely watched political contests in recent years.
