Royals’ Costly Defensive Meltdown Hands Mets Three Runs Before Kansas City Stages Comeback Win
The Kansas City Royals endured a first inning they would rather forget after a series of defensive mistakes allowed the New York Mets to score three runs on a routine ground ball during Tuesday’s game. The play unfolded with runners on first and second base and two outs when Mets right fielder Carson Benge stepped up to the plate. Benge hit a slow ground ball toward the left side of the infield. Royals third baseman Nick Loftin then collected the ball and tried to throw home to retire Bichette. His throw also missed the mark, sailing past the catcher and reaching the backstop. The additional error allowed Carson Benge to circle the bases and score as well.
By the time the chaotic sequence finally came to an end, the Mets had scored three runs on a ball that never traveled beyond the pitcher’s mound. The Royals were charged with three throwing errors on a single play, turning what should have been the final out of the inning into one of the game’s biggest moments.
The unusual defensive breakdown immediately sparked conversation across social media, where many baseball fans described it as one of the worst defensive sequences they had ever witnessed. One popular post on X even called it “the worst defensive sequence in baseball history,” reflecting the disbelief surrounding the play.
Despite the rough beginning, the Royals did not let the early mistakes decide the outcome of the game. Kansas City responded with an impressive offensive performance and completed a comeback to defeat the Mets 16-12 in a high-scoring contest.
