New Jersey Communities Turn to Drone Light Shows as Fourth of July Traditions Continue to Evolve

Some New Jersey communities are celebrating Independence Day in a different way this year as drone light shows become an alternative to traditional fireworks. One of the latest towns making that change is Haddonfield, where organizers have decided to replace fireworks with a drone display after facing ongoing challenges with hosting a fireworks event.
The planned drone show was originally scheduled for July 3, but organizers postponed the event because of extreme heat. A new date will be announced later, according to an update shared on social media.
The decision marks a significant change for Haddonfield’s annual Fourth of July celebration. For many years, the borough’s fireworks were a popular local tradition, but organizers say changing circumstances have made it increasingly difficult to continue holding them.
According to Ken Tomlinson, president of the Haddonfield Celebrations Association, the town can no longer host a fireworks display within the borough due to several practical issues.
For years, fireworks were launched from Haddonfield Memorial High School. That location became unavailable after artificial turf fields were installed, removing the space that had safely supported the annual display. Organizers later looked at another launch site, but it was too small to meet the event’s needs. Residents living nearby also raised concerns about debris left behind after fireworks shows.
Those challenges gradually made it clear that continuing the traditional fireworks program was no longer a workable option.
Haddonfield normally celebrated Independence Day with fireworks on July 3. However, the display was canceled last year because of financial difficulties. While organizers had explored drone technology several years ago, they determined at that time that the cost was too high to make the switch.
As drone technology has become more widely available, the option has become more practical. Tomlinson said Mayor Dave Seidell strongly supported the idea and helped move the project forward.
Cost has also played an important role in the decision. Traditional fireworks in Haddonfield typically cost between $18,000 and $25,000. Larger fireworks shells launched near the high school added to the overall expense. The Haddonfield Celebrations Association operates on an annual budget of about $40,000, covering multiple community events throughout the year, including Fourth of July celebrations, the Halloween Parade, the Holiday Tree Lighting, and the Santa Parade. The borough contributes $10,000 each year toward those activities.
Among all of those events, the Independence Day celebration has consistently been the most expensive to organize.
Drone light shows now offer communities another option. According to pricing information from UAV Pro, displays using 50 to 100 drones generally range from $10,000 to $20,000, while larger productions featuring between 100 and 300 drones typically cost between $12,500 and $50,000. Haddonfield officials have not announced how many drones will be used during the upcoming show.
Haddonfield is not the only New Jersey community embracing drone technology this holiday season. Several towns across the state have started including drone performances in their Independence Day celebrations, either replacing fireworks entirely or combining both attractions into a single event.
Lambertville and neighboring New Hope are scheduled to present both a traditional fireworks display and a coordinated show featuring 200 drones on July 3. Toms River also plans to offer residents both drone and fireworks events during the holiday weekend. Earlier this season, Montville combined drone lights with fireworks during its June 24 celebration.
The growing interest in drone light shows reflects how some communities are adapting long-standing holiday traditions while responding to changing budgets, venue limitations, and local concerns. Although fireworks remain a favorite Independence Day tradition for many Americans, drone displays are becoming an increasingly common feature of public celebrations in New Jersey.
