Is USPS Delivering Mail on Independence Day 2026? What to Know About Post Office Closures on July 4

Anyone planning to mail a letter, ship a package, or visit a post office on Independence Day should be aware that regular postal operations are paused on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Since the holiday falls on its actual calendar date this year, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is observing the federal holiday on Saturday, meaning post offices are closed and regular mail delivery is not taking place.

The timing of this year’s holiday has caused some confusion because many government offices and businesses observed America’s 250th Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 3, giving many employees a long holiday weekend. However, USPS followed a different schedule. Postal services remained fully operational on Friday, July 3, with post offices open and regular mail delivered across the country.

On Saturday, July 4, customers should expect all USPS post office locations to be closed. Regular residential and business mail delivery is also suspended for the day as the Postal Service observes the federal holiday. Normal postal operations, including retail services and standard mail delivery, are scheduled to resume on Monday, July 6.

Although physical post offices are closed for the holiday, many USPS services remain available online and through automated self-service options. Customers can continue to manage several postal needs without visiting a retail location. Online services allow users to purchase stamps, request mail holds, submit change-of-address requests, rent or renew P.O. Boxes, and create prepaid shipping labels through Click-N-Ship.

In addition to online services, many USPS self-service kiosks remain available around the clock, even when nearby post office buildings are closed. These kiosks allow customers to buy stamps, weigh and mail eligible packages, check package tracking information, and complete several other basic postal transactions.

Customers who have already prepared shipping labels can also use Rapid Dropoff Stations where available. Some self-service locations also support printing shipping labels using merchant-issued QR codes, making it easier for customers to send packages without waiting for a post office to reopen. USPS Smart Lockers are another option at select locations, allowing customers to both pick up and drop off packages during the holiday.

Independence Day is one of the official USPS postal holidays observed each year. Following the July 4 closure, the remaining postal holidays on the 2026 calendar include Labor Day on September 7, Columbus Day on October 12, Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving Day on November 26, and Christmas Day on December 25.

For anyone expecting important mail or planning to send packages, it is important to remember that regular USPS services are unavailable on Independence Day. Customers who need limited postal services during the holiday can still take advantage of online tools and self-service kiosks where available, while full postal operations will return on Monday, July 6.
