Social Security to Issue Limited-Edition Commemorative Cards for Babies Born During America’s 250th Anniversary Celebration

Families welcoming a new baby in the second half of 2026 will receive a unique version of an important government document. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that it will issue a special commemorative Social Security card to children born in the United States during a limited period as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
According to the agency, the commemorative cards will be available only for babies born between July 2, 2026, and December 31, 2026. This marks the first time in the history of the Social Security Administration that the agency has released a special-edition Social Security card to recognize a national milestone.
Although the design will be different, the commemorative card will serve exactly the same purpose as a standard Social Security card. There will be no changes to how the card is used for identification or Social Security-related services. The only visible difference is the addition of the official Freedom 250 logo printed in black ink, recognizing that the cardholder was born during the year of America’s 250th anniversary celebration.
The Social Security Administration said the commemorative card is part of the broader Freedom 250 celebration, which honors the nation’s history and important moments that have shaped the United States. The agency also noted that Social Security itself has played an important role in the country for more than 90 years.
In announcing the initiative, Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the Freedom 250 celebration recognizes America’s rich history and the landmark events that have helped define the nation, including the creation of the Social Security program more than nine decades ago.
The agency emphasized that the commemorative cards are available only for a limited time. Children born outside the announced eligibility window will continue to receive the traditional Social Security card design.
While the commemorative version offers a special keepsake for families, it does not provide any additional benefits or change a person’s Social Security record. Every commemorative card will carry the same official purpose and legal function as the standard version issued by the Social Security Administration.
The announcement highlights a historic first for the agency, giving eligible newborns a unique reminder that they were born during a significant year in American history while maintaining all of the features and protections of a regular Social Security card.
