Atlantic City Police Sergeant and Father of Three Critically Injured in Line-of-Duty Shooting During Search Operation

An Atlantic City police sergeant, who is also a married father of three children, remains in serious but stable condition after being critically injured in a shooting that took place during a police operation earlier this week. The incident, which also left one civilian dead and another officer injured, has drawn strong reactions from officials and the local community.
The injured officer has been identified as 34-year-old Sergeant Christian Ivanov of the Atlantic City Police Department. According to a fundraising page created to support his family, Ivanov was wounded while officers were executing a search warrant on the 100 block of North Florida Avenue at around 3 p.m. on Monday. During the operation, gunfire erupted, resulting in multiple casualties.
Authorities confirmed that one civilian was killed at the scene, while another officer sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Sergeant Ivanov was more severely injured and was immediately transported for medical treatment following the incident.
Officials described the situation as a rapidly unfolding and serious confrontation during the warrant service. The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the shooting, following state protocol for incidents where civilians are killed during police encounters. Further details about the circumstances of the shooting have not yet been released.
Community members and colleagues have described Sergeant Ivanov as a highly respected officer with a strong reputation for bravery and leadership. A GoFundMe page established by fellow officer Valmir Loga highlights Ivanov as a dedicated SWAT sergeant known for his professionalism and willingness to respond to dangerous situations without hesitation. The page also emphasizes his role not only as a law enforcement officer but as a mentor and trusted colleague.
Ivanov, originally from Bulgaria, began his service with the Atlantic City Police Department in 2013. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and was promoted to sergeant in 2023. He is also reported to be a small business owner. His family has a strong connection to law enforcement, as his brother also serves with the Atlantic City Police Department.
The emotional impact of the incident has extended beyond the department. Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Jr. issued a statement expressing concern for the injured officers and acknowledging the risks law enforcement personnel face daily while serving the public. He wished all those injured a full and speedy recovery.
As of Tuesday morning, the online fundraiser supporting Sergeant Ivanov and his family had raised more than $98,000 toward a $125,000 goal. The funds are intended to help cover medical expenses, travel needs, childcare, and other financial burdens as the family navigates his recovery process.
Sergeant Ivanov remains hospitalized in stable but serious condition as doctors continue to monitor his recovery. His colleagues, family members, and community supporters continue to rally around him, hoping for a full recovery in the days ahead.
