Mets Searching for Answers as Offensive Struggles Continue After Sweep in Miami

The New York Mets are facing growing pressure after another frustrating series ended with a sweep against the Miami Marlins. Following Sunday’s 4-0 loss, the team’s ongoing offensive problems once again became the biggest concern surrounding the club. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza admitted after the game that the current level of performance is simply not good enough, especially from a lineup that continues to struggle to create scoring opportunities.

The defeat marked the 15th game this season in which the Mets scored either zero or one run. They have lost every single one of those contests, including six shutout losses. Those numbers have become impossible to ignore as the team continues to slip after showing signs of improvement earlier in May. Instead of building momentum, the Mets have now dropped five of their last six games and appear stuck in a difficult offensive slump.

One of the biggest issues has been the overall quality of at-bats throughout the lineup. During the three-game series in Miami, New York managed only two total runs across 27 innings. While the Marlins received strong pitching performances, the Mets also contributed to their own struggles by failing to capitalize on hittable pitches. The team frequently chased pitches outside the strike zone while missing opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Veteran players are now drawing the most attention as the offense continues to underperform. Younger players such as A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge have still managed to bring energy and defensive value to the club, but several experienced hitters have failed to produce consistently. Much of the spotlight has shifted toward Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien, whose offensive numbers remain far below expectations.

Semien entered Sunday’s game with one of the lowest OPS marks among qualified hitters in Major League Baseball and struggled again with another hitless performance. Bichette has also failed to deliver the level of production many expected based on his previous seasons. His continued struggles have surprised many around baseball because of the consistency he showed earlier in his career.

The Mets are expected to receive some help soon with the likely return of Jared Young from the injured list later this week. Young has been recovering from a meniscus injury and could provide additional depth to the lineup. However, team officials understand that one player alone will not solve the broader offensive concerns that have affected the roster for much of the season.

As the Mets search for solutions, internal roster adjustments are becoming more likely. The organization may need to decide whether younger prospects deserve larger opportunities at the major league level. Prospect Nick Morabito has seen limited action since joining the club, and some within the organization may prefer to either give him regular playing time or send him back to Triple-A for continued development rather than keeping him in a limited bench role.

Another name being discussed is Ryan Clifford, a power-hitting prospect currently playing in Triple-A. Although Clifford’s strikeout rate remains high, his home run production has attracted attention at a time when the Mets desperately need more power in the middle of their batting order.

The coaching staff could also continue experimenting with lineup changes in an effort to spark production. Mendoza has already adjusted the batting order multiple times this season, but consistent offensive rhythm has remained difficult to find. Some believe the team could benefit from adding more speed near the top of the lineup while reducing pressure on struggling veterans.

Questions are also beginning to emerge about Semien’s role moving forward once injured stars return to the roster. If players like Francisco Lindor and Luis Robert Jr. become healthy again, the Mets may have more flexibility to reduce Semien’s playing time and explore alternative defensive combinations.

Outside additions may also become part of the discussion. While a major blockbuster trade may not currently fit the team’s situation, smaller moves could still be explored to strengthen weak areas of the roster. The catching position, in particular, has struggled since Francisco Alvarez landed on the injured list. Veteran catcher Elias Díaz recently became available after being designated for assignment by Kansas City, and players like him could potentially draw interest from New York if the team looks for affordable short-term help.

At this stage of the season, the Mets are searching for any spark that can help reverse the current trend. The team still has time to recover, but continued offensive inconsistency is quickly becoming one of the defining stories of its season. With another important series beginning against Cincinnati, pressure is building for the lineup to finally show signs of life before the situation grows even more difficult.
