Sean Duffy Fires Back at Pete Buttigieg With Viral Sloth-Themed Video After Road Trip Criticism

A political exchange between current Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg turned increasingly personal over the weekend after Duffy responded to criticism with a social media video comparing Buttigieg to a sloth.
The dispute began after Buttigieg criticized Duffy’s recently announced “Great American Road Trip” reality series during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Duffy had earlier revealed that he and his family spent seven months filming a five-part road trip series traveling across the United States.
During the interview, Buttigieg questioned the timing and message behind the project, arguing that many Americans are currently struggling with higher travel costs. He said promoting a road trip as affordable does not reflect the financial reality facing many families dealing with rising fuel prices and economic pressure.
Buttigieg also contrasted Duffy’s road trip with his own experience serving in Afghanistan, saying his taxpayer-funded travel had been tied to government work rather than entertainment. He argued that transportation leadership should remain focused on affordability and safety concerns affecting Americans nationwide.
The former transportation secretary additionally criticized Duffy’s social media activity, suggesting that online memes and political messaging could distract from more pressing transportation issues. According to Buttigieg, the Department of Transportation’s main priority should be addressing infrastructure, safety, and transportation affordability rather than political branding.
Later the same day, Duffy responded publicly through a post on X. In the message, he accused Buttigieg of moving slowly during his time leading the Department of Transportation and claimed the current administration was operating “at the speed of Trump.”
The post included a video that opened with footage of a sloth alongside clips of Buttigieg. A narrator in the video says that sloths are known for being slow before the video shifts to scenes featuring Duffy and President Donald Trump highlighting what Duffy described as accomplishments made by the Department of Transportation during the administration’s first year.
The video quickly gained attention online as the political disagreement evolved into a broader debate over transportation priorities, government messaging, and economic concerns tied to travel costs in the United States.
The exchange also reflects the increasingly aggressive style of political communication now common on social media platforms, where short videos, memes, and viral content often become part of official political responses. While supporters of Duffy praised the video as a sharp defense of the administration’s work, critics argued that the response avoided addressing the underlying concerns Buttigieg raised about transportation affordability and rising costs.
The disagreement comes at a time when transportation and fuel prices remain major concerns for many Americans. Public frustration over travel expenses has become a recurring political issue as officials from both parties debate energy policy, inflation, and government spending.
Neither side appeared to back away from the dispute on Sunday, with both officials using national media and social platforms to defend their records and criticize the other’s leadership approach at the Department of Transportation.
