Two Lives Lost After Box Truck Plunges from I-78 Overpass in Newark

A tragic crash on Interstate 78 in Essex County claimed the lives of two individuals on Wednesday evening, according to state authorities. The incident occurred in Newark and involved a box truck that lost control before overturning and falling from an overpass.
Officials reported that the crash took place at approximately 6:25 p.m. in the local lanes near milepost 56.6. Based on preliminary findings from the investigation, the truck was traveling eastbound when it suddenly veered off the roadway. It first struck a concrete barrier, then continued moving before colliding with a light pole. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn.
Authorities stated that after overturning, the truck left the roadway entirely and descended from the I-78 overpass into a dirt area below. The severity of the crash led to fatal consequences for both individuals inside the vehicle.
The driver has been identified as 35-year-old Chad Hill of Edison. He was ejected from the truck during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 46-year-old passenger traveling with him also lost their life. Officials have not released the passenger’s identity, as they are still in the process of notifying family members.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under active investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, and no additional details have been provided at this time.
