Rutgers’ Pattern of Promise and Collapse Persists in Defeat to Washington

Rutgers lost a tough Power Five game. Washington beat the Scarlet Knights 38–19 after their defense and attack failed. You may start well then suffer in the third and fourth quarters.
Rutgers gained. While the offense produced big plays, the defense stopped the ball near the goal to keep the lead. Washington sped up after midway. The Rams surrendered 59, 38, and 19 yards in seven plays. Washington quarterback Williams has four touchdowns without an INT. Second-half Scarlet Knights defenders quit.
Many Rutgers offensive drives into Washington’s red zone failed. Last goal for Scarlet Knights. They had six more red zone scoring chances on 11 plays of 15 yards or more. You must beat 58.6% in the red zone on keys.
RB Antwan Raymond excelled again. On Rutgers’ first play, he ran 51 yards and caught a 48-yard touchdown pass before the defenders caught him. He was a breakout contender with 178 yards (89 running, 89 catching) and a score this year. He played well despite slow defense.
Rutgers kicker Jai Patel battled again Friday. He hit 35-yard but missed 45-yard shots. His dependability is concerning; he missed four of his past six after making six straight, a season high. The 37-yard try before halftime saved him. Kicking is poor in close games where every score matters.
Kaliakmanis threw for 386 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception on 31 of 50 attempts. Moving the ball in the 20s changed his red zone play. The penultimate Rutgers four-yard pass was intercepted, ending the rally. For five games, the offensive line has allowed three or more sacks. The quarterback had trouble balancing and getting pocket time.
Their league start is bad following this loss. Scarlet Knights must win three of their last six games to reach their third straight bowl game. Penn State, Oregon, and Ohio State are strong. Rutgers must stop losing after a good start. Improve third-quarter defense, capitalize on red zone opportunities, and locate a reliable quarterback and kicker. To survive this season, Rutgers must stop their bad luck.
