A newly appointed police officer in New Jersey is being formally honored after carrying out a life-saving rescue during harsh winter conditions, showing courage and quick decision-making early in his career.

Officer Jake Tapia was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Medford Lakes Police Department during his official swearing-in ceremony held at a borough council meeting. Although he joined the department in February last year, the ceremony had been delayed due to a serious medical diagnosis involving his mother. The event became even more meaningful as he was surrounded by family members, including his mother, while receiving recognition for his bravery.

The award was given in response to Tapia’s actions on March 8, when he responded to an emergency in the early hours of the morning. Around 5 a.m., while he was conducting routine traffic enforcement on Stokes Avenue, he suddenly heard a loud crash followed by screams. Acting immediately, he moved toward the source of the noise and discovered a vehicle that had veered off the road and plunged nearly 30 feet into Barringer Lake.

Without hesitation, Officer Tapia entered the freezing water. Despite extremely low temperatures, with the air around 37 degrees and the water estimated at about 40 degrees, he swam toward the submerged vehicle. Inside was a 25-year-old woman who had been trapped following the crash. Tapia successfully reached her and helped bring her safely back to shore.

Authorities confirmed that the woman, a resident of Lumberton, was taken to Virtua Mount Holly Hospital for treatment and was later released. Her survival is being credited directly to the officer’s immediate and selfless response.

Police Chief John G. McGinnis Jr. praised Tapia’s actions, describing them as decisive and courageous. He emphasized that the officer’s willingness to put himself in danger reflects the highest standards of law enforcement and brings honor not only to the department but also to the wider community.

The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of police work and the level of commitment required to respond to emergencies at any moment. For a relatively new officer, Tapia’s actions demonstrate both professionalism and a deep sense of duty.

This recognition serves as a reminder of the critical role first responders play, especially in life-threatening situations where every second counts. Officer Tapia’s actions on that cold March morning stand as a powerful example of bravery, reinforcing public trust in law enforcement and their dedication to protecting lives under any circumstances.
