Patti LaBelle Announces First Original R&B Album in More Than Two Decades, Says the Music Reflects Who She Is Today
Legendary soul singer Patti LaBelle has revealed that she is working on her first original R&B album in more than 20 years, marking an important moment in her long and successful music career. The award-winning artist shared that the project has been in development for about a year and will feature songs that honestly represent her life today rather than trying to recreate the music of her younger years.
At 82, LaBelle says her focus is on making music that feels true to who she is. Instead of chasing trends or recording songs that do not fit her stage of life, she wants the upcoming album to reflect her personal experiences and identity. She explained that creating age-appropriate music is important because she believes every artist should remain authentic rather than trying to be someone they are not.
The singer, whose birth name is Patricia Holte, said she wants listeners to hear music that genuinely represents Patti LaBelle. According to her, the songs on the upcoming record will be built around that idea, allowing fans to connect with an artist who continues to evolve while staying true to herself.
LaBelle’s last original R&B album, “Patti LaBelle: Classic Moments,” was released in 2005. Since then, she has explored different musical styles, including her jazz album “Bel Hommage” in 2017 and the holiday album “Miss Patti’s Christmas” in 2007. Although she remained active in music and live performances, fans have waited many years for another original R&B project, making this announcement especially meaningful.
The music icon is also preparing to co-host a special tribute concert, “Nightbirds: The Music of Labelle,” at Lincoln Center on June 28. The event celebrates the 50th anniversary of her groundbreaking group, Labelle, becoming the first African American female group to headline the Metropolitan Opera House. The anniversary recognizes a historic achievement that helped shape the future of women in music and opened doors for many performers who followed.
After spending more than six decades in the entertainment industry, LaBelle recently said she proudly accepts being called a legend. She believes the title reflects years of dedication, consistency, and hard work throughout her career. Rather than viewing it as an exaggeration, she considers it recognition that has been earned over time through her lasting impact on the music industry.
During recent interviews, LaBelle also spoke about the growing problem of false information created using artificial intelligence. She shared that she has repeatedly been the subject of fabricated online stories, including false claims about cosmetic surgery and even pregnancy-related rumors. She described the situation as frustrating and said the misinformation has spread despite having no basis in reality.
Even so, LaBelle acknowledged that she cannot control what people create or share online. While she disagrees with the false stories, she accepts that such content will continue to appear regardless of her opinion. Her comments reflect the broader challenges many public figures face as artificial intelligence makes it easier for misinformation to spread across digital platforms.
With a new original R&B album now in the works, Patti LaBelle is once again showing why she remains one of the most respected voices in soul music. Rather than looking backward, she is embracing the present by creating songs that match her life, her experience, and the artist she has become. For longtime fans, the upcoming release represents not only the return of new R&B music but also another chapter in the remarkable career of a performer whose influence has spanned generations.
