New Jersey Truck Driver Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Multi-Vehicle Highway Incident in Illinois

A New Jersey truck driver is facing serious criminal charges, including attempted murder, after authorities say he was involved in a dangerous sequence of crashes and a violent attack on another driver on an Illinois highway. The case has raised concerns about road safety and aggressive driving involving large commercial vehicles.

According to law enforcement officials, the accused has been identified as 25-year-old Hassan A. Moutassim, a resident of Jersey City, New Jersey. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, aggravated battery in a public place, and aggravated battery involving strangulation. Prosecutors in Illinois classified the attempted murder charge as a Class X felony, which is among the most severe felony categories under state law.

The incident reportedly took place on a Wednesday along Route 57 in Illinois, beginning near the area of 127th Street close to Calumet Park. Authorities stated that multiple emergency calls were received after a series of crashes involving a semi-truck. Investigators allege that the truck driven by Moutassim was operated in a reckless manner, leading to a chain of at least eight separate collisions along the highway.

The situation escalated further near Halsted Street in Chicago, where the final crash in the series occurred. After stopping his commercial vehicle, the driver allegedly exited the truck and approached another occupied car on foot. Officials reported that he then forcefully removed the driver from their vehicle.

Law enforcement claims the suspect physically assaulted the victim, including beating and strangling them during the confrontation. The injured driver was later transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities did not confirm whether any other individuals were injured in the multiple crashes that occurred earlier along the highway.

Illinois State Police responded to the scene and took the suspect into custody shortly after the incident. Following an initial review, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved several felony charges the next day. The suspect remains in custody as he awaits his first court appearance.

Officials have not yet released further details regarding a possible motive behind the incident. Investigators continue to review evidence, including roadway surveillance and witness statements, to better understand the sequence of events that led to the crashes and subsequent attack.

The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of a commercial truck and the number of collisions reported in a short period of time, highlighting ongoing concerns about highway safety and aggressive driving incidents involving large vehicles.

Authorities have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.
