New Jersey Resident Defends Family After Late-Night Break-In Turns Violent

A quiet neighborhood in New Jersey was shaken early Sunday morning after a man was forced to defend his home and family during a sudden and aggressive break-in attempt. According to local authorities, the incident took place in Bergen County when an intruder tried to force his way into an apartment while a family was asleep inside.
The resident, a father, told police he was asleep in his apartment on Faller Drive in New Milford when he was awakened by knocking at his front door at approximately 3:35 a.m. Initially unsure of the situation, he slightly opened the door and found an unfamiliar man standing outside. The homeowner informed the individual that he had the wrong apartment and shut the door.
However, the situation quickly escalated. Police said the man outside began banging on the door aggressively, raising serious concerns for the safety of the family inside. At the time, the resident’s wife and child were asleep in the apartment, making the situation even more alarming.
Fearing for their safety, the homeowner took precautionary action. He armed himself with a kitchen knife and again partially opened the door, attempting once more to tell the individual that he was at the wrong location. Despite the warning, the intruder forcefully kicked the door open, pushing the resident backward into the living room.
What followed was a physical struggle between the two men. Authorities reported that both individuals fell to the floor during the altercation. In an effort to protect himself and his family, the resident used the knife, injuring the intruder during the struggle. The wound was described by police as a deep cut extending from above the man’s right ear toward the back of his head.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the incident. Upon arrival, officers assessed the situation and determined that the intruder appeared to be intoxicated and had mistakenly targeted the wrong apartment. He was later identified as a 26-year-old man from Long Branch.
The injured individual was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he received treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Following the investigation, authorities charged him with trespassing, and officials indicated that additional charges could be filed as the case develops.
Police confirmed that the homeowner acted in defense of his family and will not face any charges related to the incident.
This case highlights the unpredictable nature of home intrusions and the difficult decisions individuals may face when confronted with sudden threats. Law enforcement continues to remind residents to report suspicious activity immediately and to prioritize safety in emergency situations.
