New Jersey Man Faces Murder Charge After Victim Dies a Day Following Violent Assault

A serious criminal case is unfolding in New Jersey after authorities confirmed that a man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman who was allegedly assaulted in Paterson. The development came after the victim, a 29-year-old woman, passed away a day after being found unresponsive, according to officials from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident took place on March 27 near the area of 299 Market Street in Paterson. Law enforcement officers responded after the woman was discovered unconscious at the scene. Emergency responders quickly transported her to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where she received medical treatment. Despite efforts to save her, she died the following day due to the injuries she sustained.

Authorities identified the suspect as 34-year-old Matthew Vega, a resident of Paterson. He was initially taken into custody on the same day as the incident and faced charges including second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Investigators later updated the charges to include murder after the victim’s condition worsened and resulted in her death.

In addition to the assault, officials reported that Vega allegedly abducted the victim’s young son during the incident. Law enforcement agencies acted quickly, and the child was safely located soon after. He has since been reunited with family members, and no further harm was reported in connection with the abduction.

Vega is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail. Prosecutors are seeking to keep him in custody while the case proceeds through the legal system. A court hearing regarding his detention status is scheduled to take place in Superior Court.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities continue to gather information and review evidence. Officials have urged anyone who may have additional details about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.

This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns around violent crime and public safety in local communities. Law enforcement agencies have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice is served while maintaining transparency throughout the legal process.
